The History of North Fambridge

In the Doomsday book Fambridge was written "Fanbruge" then "Phenbridge" and later was called "Fenbridge". Many people believe that the latter part of the name was derived from the fact that a bridge used to span the river although no trace of a bridge appears to have been recorded. "Fam", or "Fen" as it was written in Saxon times, means foam or froth and at times, when the tide is turning there would be plenty of that where Ferry Road ran down into the water.

Exactly when the ferry was introduced is uncertain but we do know that there was a ferry when the Earl of Warrick was patron to the Holy Trinity Church between the years 1331 and 1465.

Acknowledgement - Much of the historic information included on this site has been extracted from a book entitled The Parish of North Fambridge by Jeff Braithwaite. Our thanks to Jeff for allowing this. The book was a limited edition published in the year 2000 but some copies are still available. See right for more details.
